In November 1989, single mum Julie Hogg vanished from her home in Billingham and left her family distraught. Months later, her body was found hidden behind a bath panel by her mother Ann Ming – she had been sexually mutilated and likely strangled. Billy Dunlop was twice tried for Julie’s murder, but both juries failed to reach a verdict – protected by Britain’s 800-year-old double jeopardy law, he could not be tried again even after boasting about committing the ‘perfect murder’. Ann refused to give up and campaigned for 17 years to change the law – Dunlop was finally retried and jailed for life in October 2006, the first person convicted under the new rules, and Ann’s fight also paved the way for other landmark convictions including those of Stephen Lawrence’s killers. This companion documentary to ITV’s I Fought the Law – narrated by Sheridan Smith, who portrays Ann in the drama – tells Ann’s extraordinary story through interviews with family, friends, and retired officers.
